How to talk to your doctor about Medical Marijuana

There has been some discussion about how to approach the topic in the Montana NORML forum.

Some things to remember while talking to your doctor:
  • It is not a "prescription" (best to not use that word at all)
  • Bring the state form with you.
  • The state law protects doctors in section 50-46-201(4):
"A physician may not be arrested, prosecuted, or penalized in any manner or be denied any right or privilege, including but not limited to civil penalty or disciplinary action by the board of medical examiners or the department of labor and industry, for providing written certification for the medical use of marijuana to qualifying patients."
  • Federally, doctors are similarly protected after the Conant decision.
  • There is a list of qualifying conditions in the law; these are included in the physicians' statement, which you should print and bring to your appointment. It should be clear in your mind which of the conditions are applicable in your case.
  • Note that the physician's statement does not claim that medical marijuana is the best or only treatment the doctor might advise. It simply states that "The potential benefits of medical marijuana will likely outweigh the health risks for this patient. "
