Montana NORML - Menubar
Wednesday, August 16th, 2000
In October 1998, Montana NORML and Montanans for Medical Rights sent out surveys to 200 Montana legislators and candidates. The survey asked 3 basic questions, regarding medical marijuana, industrial hemp, and recreational use. Little by little, the results have come in, and are documented below in our legislative "scorecard". If you're not sure which legislator represents your interests in Helena, check our contact page. As more surveys arrive, we'll post them, so please visit regularly if your legislator doesn't appear in the table below.

Updated November 20th with election result information.

Joan Hurdle democrat HD-13 yes yes yes, yes
Daniel Fuchs republican HD-15 Yes, from everything I have read and heard there are real medicinal benefits from marijuana. I don't see why not, I do not have the perceptions or fears about this that some might. That would depend on the legislation. How much in possession, etc. I personally don't believe marijuana used in moderation to be harmful. But, I can't imagine it being for sale at the corner grocery store.
Mary Anne Guggenheim democrat HD-55 Yes Yes Complex...I am a physician and generally sympathetic to the medical use of marijuana.
Rosalie Buzzas democrat HD-65 I support allowing doctors and patients to make decisions on this matter. This should come under the sanctity of the patient-doctor relationship. I do support industrial use of hemp and believe Montana farmers should have the choice to cultivate and sell it. While I do believe it's ridiculous to be locking up so many people for this offense vs. others, I cannot support legalization at this time as I am concerned about damage done to lives with use of other legal drugs such as alcohol and tobacco. I'm not too interested in legalizing more substances for people to abuse.
Verdell Jackson republican HD-79 Yes, but need more info on how marijuana is used for life-threatening illnesses Yes for hemp, but no for marijuana No. Marijuana is a very destructive drug among our young people. It impairs judgement and leads to serious offenses. It serves no useful purpose as a recreational aid.
Ric Holden republican SD-1 NO I don't believe in legalizing marijuana for medical purposes. This is the first time I have heard of this concept. I am willing to listen to both sides. I may be agreeable to this. NO - I have seen terrible results from the use of marijuana. I believe in stiff penalties to serve as a deterint. [sic]
Mignon Waterman democrat SD-26 In general, I support letting medical personnel make medical decisions. We need to expand alternative crop options and I would consider this proposal. It is clear we need to revisit the war on drugs and its effect on prison populations.
Mike Halligan democrat SD-34 No. Society has determined which drugs are or should be illegal throughits criminal and other laws. Doctors are not above the law, nor should their treatment be. Don't know. no, no
Rick Hill's position on medical marijuana.
